Profilocolore provides diagnostic experts with rigorously scientific data and images resulting from accurate, precise, and repeatable measurements that eliminate variables due to the operator and shooting conditions. 

Thanks to an AI-based calibration process, the Profilocolore system transforms images into measurements.

The system uses absolute radiometric and colorimetric references, measured in Profilocolore laboratories with certified instruments that are in turn calibrated by international metrology institutes. The results obtained in this way have an accuracy and repeatability rate of around 98%.

The accuracy of the process is complemented by additional measures and procedures that greatly simplify and speed up the entire acquisition process.

In the field of diagnostics, whether for restoration, monitoring, or conservation, false color images (IRfc, UVfc) have always been a valuable resource and an immediate aid for cultural heritage professionals. The strength of this method lies in the simplicity and immediacy of pigment identification.

The innovation of Profilocolore

Offering diagnostics based on a rigorous, scientific approach, while maintaining ease and speed of use. Our technology returns the CIELAB colorimetric coordinates and a radiometric reflectance spectrum sampled in at least 13 bands for each point in the images, all certified and with 98% accuracy. False-color images are also produced from this data, but this time from accurate and repeatable data.

The process

Profilocolore's HMI (Hypercolorimetric Multispectral Imaging) system is based on a simple and linear operational flow, designed to ensure maximum precision and repeatability at every stage of the diagnostic process.

Four steps guide the entire workflow, from capturing the spectral image to returning the scientific data through a set of hardware and software that are perfectly integrated with each other.

Camera control via USB

With CapturePick , you can control the entire acquisition phase: the software controls every camera parameter (live view, focus, shutter speed, ISO, format), organizes shooting sequences in a consistent manner (including filters), automates exposure when needed, and sets naming and archiving according to rules defined by the customer. The result is an orderly and traceable set of images, ready for the next phase.

Calibration of images in spectral and colorimetric images

The transition to SpectraPick is the calibration phase: images are aligned pixel by pixel, corrected for lighting non-uniformity and flash fluctuations, and transformed into reliable colorimetric (e.g., Lab/AdobeRGB) and spectral (bands in the sensor range) outputs, including the automatic generation of false colors useful for diagnostics. Other calibration software includes VisiPick, DocuPick (includes camera control)

Spectral image analysis and integration with other technologies

With PickViewer , analysis and reporting are performed: work is carried out by area (from pixels to ROI), colorimetric and spectral data are read and compared, similarity maps are created, tools such as PCA and clustering are applied, and data from other techniques (e.g., point measurements) are also integrated, while maintaining alignment with the original images. From here, results and reports are exported in standard formats, ready for documentation and sharing.

Comparison and reporting

Finally, DeltaViewer completes the comparison process: it serves to highlight, in a clear and measurable way, the differences ("delta") between acquisitions or between different conditions/areas, transforming them into readable outputs ready for the final report. Other Report and Condition Report software includes: ColorCompare, PickViewer (reporting functions).

With this innovative and scientific approach, Profilocolore introduces a new level of reliability and repeatability in the production of diagnostic images: no more subjective interpretations, but a scientific language that is objective and can be shared among restorers, art historians, and diagnostic technicians.

    During the analysis phase, spectral and colorimetric measurements are automatically compared with a spectral database to identify the pigment, with a list of potential candidate pigments in order of similarity. The database can be updated by the user with data extracted from images or measured externally with laboratory instruments.
